Covered walkway containers as a modular solution for Schiphol Airport
K-tainer created innovative covered walkway containers at Schiphol Airport
At Schiphol Airport, tens of thousands of travelers, staff, and suppliers move daily between terminals, parking areas, and offices. Ensuring dry and safe walking routes is essential. K-tainer was commissioned to provide a solution in the form of covered walkway containers at Schiphol.
This project required more than just delivering containers. From an early stage, architectural firm Benthem Crouwel NACO was involved, together with our engineers. We conducted meetings and site visits at Schiphol, identified technical challenges, and designed solutions that are both functional and aesthetically aligned with the airport environment.
The project was carried out in collaboration with our partners, with whom we successfully completed the process from request to delivery.

Technical challenges and container solutions
The covered walkway at Schiphol had to be more than just a functional connection; it also needed to match the airport’s architectural identity. That’s why we implemented:
- Glass walls: transparent, light-transmitting, and modern, fitting seamlessly with Schiphol’s architecture.
- Special flooring structure: safe, durable, and resistant to heavy use by travelers and staff.
- Green roof (sedum): sustainable, eco-friendly, and supporting Schiphol’s climate ambitions.
- Weather resistance: protection against rain and wind, tailored to the open spaces around the airport.
- Regulations: fully compliant with Schiphol’s strict fire safety and airport regulations.
The experience K-tainer gained with the Schiphol project proves that containers can also provide a flexible and reliable solution for complex infrastructure challenges.
Applications and advantages of covered walkway containers
Although this project was specifically realized for Schiphol, coveredwalkway containers can be applied more broadly:
- Airports: temporary or permanent walkways for passengers and staff.
- Event venues: dry connections between halls or festival grounds.
- Business parks: practical routes between warehouses, offices, and parking areas.
- Education & public spaces: campus solutions, parks, and stations.
