Ammonia as an energy carrier? We’re keeping a close eye on it.
Published on 25 June 2025

Within the European Horizon 2020 project ARENHA, intensive work is being done on an innovative solution for energy storage: ammonia as a carrier of green energy. Our partner Proton Ventures plays a key role – and K-tainer is (literally) in the picture.
What is the ARENHA project about?
ARENHA explores how surplus renewable energy can be stored in the form of ammonia. When electricity demand rises, this ammonia can be converted back into hydrogen. A safe, scalable, and sustainable solution.
Proton Ventures takes the lead
Proton Ventures BV is responsible for the design and construction of an advanced ammonia synthesis loop within the ARENHA project. The system is designed to produce up to 10 kg of NH₃ per day under milder operating conditions than conventional Haber-Bosch processes. The produced ammonia will be stored at its equilibrium vapor pressure at ambient temperature, eliminating the need for active refrigeration or high-pressure storage.
The core innovation of this synthesis unit lies in the integration of novel or commercial catalytic materials, advanced ammonia sorption and separation techniques, and a flexible, modular process design that can adapt to variable renewable energy inputs.
K-tainer on the container (literally)
We’re not actively involved in this project, but… our container is there. With our name on it. And that’s secretly quite fun. It’s nothing more than a logistical contribution, but it does say something: containers are increasingly being used in innovative energy projects.
We also see this in our own work: from containers for fuel cells, battery storage and energy units to complete transformations for machines and technical installations.
K-tainer is growing in this field
We’re continuously learning, developing, and adapting. With our experience and strong partners like Proton Ventures, we’re ready for the next step. One thing is clear: the combination of containers and sustainable energy offers great opportunities – and we’re seizing them.
European support
The ARENHA project is funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 862482.
A promising innovation, a great collaboration – and who knows what’s next.
K-tainer. Flexible containers for a world in transition.
